How heat pumps work

Unlike air conditioners and furnaces that cool or heat air, heat pumps operate by extracting heat from air and moving it.

Where the heat is moved to depends on the season: in the summer, the heat pump draws the heat out of your home’s air and moves it outside, cooling the inside of your home. In the winter, this is reversed, and the heat pump pulls warmth out of outside air and moves it inside your home to make your family comfortable.

This process is accomplished with refrigerant, which absorbs heat and releases heat when it reaches a condenser. This refrigerant travels in an insulated line between an outside unit and your home.

It’s just physics, really. What’s more, you currently have a heat pump system in your home, and you probably didn’t even know it. Your refrigerator keeps your food cold using the same technology, removing heat from the interior of the fridge and releasing it outside of the fridge.

In fact, most air conditioners use the same process at heat pumps. Your home’s air conditioner is also extracting warm air from your home and putting it outside. It’s just not reversible for winter heating use.
